Beautiful original 1960's Italian brass shopping bag by Gio Ponti. These are HARD to find and very well sought after. This bag is in good vintage condition with no rust or broken edges, cracks etc. It has an aged oxidation to the brass that could easily be completely shined back to a very reflective gold surface if you preferred. Has the original makers mark and "Made in Italy" stamp on the bottom! This piece is AMAZING.

Gio Ponti was an Italian architect, designer, and artist who lived from 1891 to 1979. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential designers of the 20th century.
One of Ponti's most famous designs is the brass shopping bag, which he created in 1957 for the Italian luxury goods company, F.lli Reguitti. The bag is made from thin sheets of brass that have been cut, folded, and riveted together to create a lightweight and durable structure.
The design of the brass shopping bag was inspired by the traditional market bags that were used in Ponti's native Italy. However, Ponti's version is elevated with its use of luxurious materials and innovative construction techniques.
The brass shopping bag was an instant success and became a symbol of Italian design and craftsmanship. It was praised for its elegant simplicity and functional beauty, and was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 1958.
Today, the brass shopping bag is considered a design classic and is still in production by F.lli Reguitti. It has been reinterpreted by many other designers over the years, and has inspired countless other products and designs.
In addition to the brass shopping bag, Ponti created many other iconic designs throughout his career, including furniture, ceramics, glassware, and architecture. His work is known for its modernist aesthetic, attention to detail, and innovative use of materials and technology.
