Set of 2 Wood Carved Elephant Base Lamps
We absolutely love these very tall and incredibly detailed hand carved wood elephant table lamps. Each one features a grouping of elephant faces on a solid wood base with etched detailing. The top can come out as needed to adjust the wire etc. Has the original brass finiel and takes a standard light bulb.
Both still work perfectly when plugged in and the wiring is in good shape. Both are in good vintage shape. All the elephants are missing their tusks (which they may have not come with.) One of the bases has a slight chip that doesn't hurt the overall integrity of the item. Both do not come with a lamp shade.
Measures without the brass harps and bulbs - 7.75" D X 33.75" H (7.5" H added with harp - No finiel)
In Asia and Africa, elephants were revered as symbols of power, wisdom, and good luck. These cultures often used elephant motifs in their art and furniture, including lamps.
In India, the art of wood carving has been practiced for centuries, and elephants have been a popular subject for carvers. Indian craftsmen created intricate designs on wooden lamps using chisels, knives, and other tools. These lamps often featured the elephant as the central motif, either as a standalone figure or as part of a larger design.
Similarly, in Africa, elephants have been an important part of the culture and art of many tribes for centuries. Wooden elephant lamps were created using traditional carving techniques and often incorporated other symbols and motifs from African culture.
As trade routes expanded between Asia, Africa, and Europe, wooden elephant lamps became popular decorative items among wealthy Europeans. They were often brought back as souvenirs by traders and colonial officials who had visited these regions.
